Nvidia May Guarantee $250B of OpenAI's Ohio Data Center. The Debt Markets Balked First.

Nvidia is in talks to provide a $250 billion financing guarantee to backstop OpenAI's 10-gigawatt Ohio data center, plus a separate roughly $350 billion package for chip purchases. OpenAI needs Nvidia's credit because it cannot secure the financing on its own.

Nvidia May Guarantee $250B of OpenAI's Ohio Data Center. The Debt Markets Balked First.

Nvidia is in advanced talks to provide a $250 billion financing guarantee to backstop OpenAI's planned data center in Pike County, Ohio, a 10-gigawatt facility on the site of a former uranium-enrichment plant, per Yahoo Finance. The total project is estimated above $500 billion. Separately, Nvidia is reportedly discussing a package worth roughly $350 billion to help fund OpenAI's chip purchases. Terms are not final and the deal may not close.

The number that tells the story is why the guarantee exists at all, more than its $250 billion size. OpenAI is highly valued but unprofitable, and a data center of this scale needs conventional lease and construction financing that lenders price on the borrower's ability to repay. The market looked at OpenAI's cash flows and would not fund it on its own terms, so OpenAI is borrowing Nvidia's credit rating to bridge the gap. Nvidia guarantees the debt, the lenders get comfortable, the facility gets built, and it fills with Nvidia chips. This is vendor financing at the largest scale the industry has attempted.

We have tracked this shape all year, and here it reaches its logical extreme. Nvidia invests in the labs that buy its GPUs, prepays the packaging vendors that assemble them, and would now guarantee the real-estate debt for the data centers that house them. Each link is defensible on its own. Stacked together, a growing share of the AI build-out is financed by the one company whose chips it all runs on, which concentrates the upside and the risk in the same place. If OpenAI's economics work, the guarantee is free marketing. If they do not, Nvidia is on the hook for a data center it helped will into existence.

A $250 billion guarantee is what it looks like when the debt markets say no and the chip vendor says yes. Watch whether other labs now expect the same backstop, because once Nvidia underwrites one data center, its balance sheet becomes the sector's lender of last resort.
