Nvidia is in early discussions with Rebellions, the Korean AI chip designer, about a technical partnership, an investment, or a possible acquisition, per Bloomberg. Jensen Huang met co-founder and CEO Sunghyun Park at Nvidia's Santa Clara headquarters this week. Rebellions, founded in 2020 and based in Bundang, builds neural processing units for data centers tuned specifically for inference. It has raised roughly $850 million from backers including SK hynix, Samsung Ventures, and Arm, carries a valuation near $2.3 billion, holds direct Korean government investment, and is preparing a possible Korean IPO in the first half of 2027, per Seeking Alpha. The talks are preliminary and may produce nothing.
The interesting part is which end of the market Nvidia is shopping in. Rebellions builds NPUs for inference, the same territory as Etched and as Taalas, which AMD agreed to buy this month. Nvidia dominates training and has the strongest position in inference too, so approaching a specialist reads as a hedge against the one scenario that threatens it: inference fragmenting toward purpose-built silicon that beats general GPUs on tokens per watt. Buying or partnering with a credible NPU team converts that risk into an option.
The cap table explains the rest. SK hynix and Samsung Ventures are both investors, which puts Rebellions inside the Korean memory complex that supplies the HBM every accelerator depends on, and the Korean government holds a direct stake. That makes a clean acquisition politically harder than a partnership, since Seoul has spent this year treating domestic chip capability as strategic infrastructure, including the roughly $880 billion industrial program we covered in July.
